The Nam Ou cascade hydropower project is a series of seven hydroelectric dams along the Nam Ou (river) in Phongsaly and Luang Prabang provinces of northern Lao PDR. The project is managed by PowerChina and the Lao government under a build, operate and transfer (BOT) agreement signed in April 2011. Some of the Nam Ou cascade projects have franchise periods of 25 years while others have 29 year periods.

The Nam Ou 6 project was developed as a joint venture of EDL GEN (15%) and Sinohydro (85%), a subsidiary of Power China, under a 25-year build, operate and transfer (BOT) agreement signed April 2011 and the project commenced commercial production in 2015.

The gross head of the project is 60 meters.

Construction of the project was managed by Sinohydro Corporation, a subsidiary of Power China.

Nam Ou 6 location is at coordinates 21°46'08.4"N 102°11'42.0"E (21.769000, 102.195000) as shown in image below:

Nam Ou 6 powerhouse has three 60 MW Francis turbines with an combined output of 180 MW and ability to generate 726 GWh output per year.

The project has a 88 meter high rockfill dam with more than 80% of the dam structure filled with soft rock.

The gross head of the project is 60 meters.

The Nam Ou 6 reservoir has a catchment area of 5,480 square kilometers. The reservoir is 46.9 km long and covers an area of 17 square km. It has storage capacity of 409 milllion cubic meters with 246 million cubic meters active storage volume regulating capacity.

Nam Ou Dams 5, 6 & 7 may have transmission line connections for export of their output (or part of it) to Vietnam as seen in 2030 planning maps below. But we don't know if any Power Purchase Agreements have been signed yet.
