Nam Phak Dam Oudomxay Hydropower Info by Hobo Maps - Go to Hydropower Projects Page - - Home

There are two different and unrelated hydropower projects in Laos named " Nam Phak" for which we have separate web pages.

1. At the Bolaven Plateau in southern Laos there is a 128 MW Nam Phak Hydropower Project being developed by CS Energy Co. that started construction in March 2021.

Click to see our separate web page for this Southern Laos project that we call - Nam Phak Bolaven.

2. The rest of this web page below discusses a different project in northern Laos that we call Nam Phak Oudomxay.

Vientiane Times, May 28, 2014 - Lao-based Sahamit Phatthana Company Limited has concluded an agreement with the government of Lao PDR to commence a feasibility study regarding the construction of the Nam Phak hydropower project in La District, Oudomxay province.

The proposed Nam Phak hydropower project is located on the Nam Phak (river) in La district, Oudomxay province. The proposed project would have 3 separate dams called Nam Phak 1, 2 & 3 and all three would be spaced apart on the upper reaches of the Nam Phak (river) northwest of where the Nam Phak crosses National Road 2E near Muang La town. The three projects would be located roughly 10 km, 20 km and 30 km upriver from Muang La town.

On satellite images viewed in year 2022 we don't see any construction activity or anything else that would indicate a start of development.

Nam Phak 1 coordinates are 20°55'52.5"N 102°07'15.8"E (20.931255, 102.121056)

Nam Phak 2 coordinates are 20°59'36.1"N 102°04'27.4"E  (20.993360, 102.074265)

Nam Phak 3 coordinates are 21°00'38.9"N 101°59'48.0"E (21.010815, 101.996666)

Nam Phak is pronounced like "Nam Pack".

The water head would be about 300 meters while the water catchment basin extends over an area of 500 square kilometers.

The surface area of the reservoir itself would cover an area of five square kilometers.

The hydropower project may have a combined installed capacity of 80-100 MW if the company receives permission to build.

A company official in 2014 said the feasibility study for the project will take at least 18 months before the results are known and its viability can be assessed.

Sahamit Phatthana Company Limited is a joint-venture company between four different companies: Ari Construction, Lao Consulting Group, Xaysana Construction and Asia Investment and Services Company Limited.

We are unsure of the project's status as of 2024.

An older website chart below shows planning for Nam Phak 1 at 28 MW, Nam Phak 2 at 28 MW & Nam Phak 3 at 40 MW for total of 98 MW capacity.

Another old website page shows Nam Phak 1 at 30 MW, Nam Phak 2 at 26 MW & Nam Phak 3 at 40 MW (total 98 MW) - https://www.ilf.com/lo-la/references-lo/ .
