Xekong 3 Dams Hydropower Info by Hobo Maps - Go to Hydropower Projects Page - - - Home

Xekong 3A and 3B hydropower projects are being developed by Lao-based Asia Investment and Development Co. Ltd. The dams are proposed to be located on the Xekong (Sekong) river in Xekong Province of southern Lao PDR.

Both 3A & 3B projects are apparently under construction in 2026 but we don't see any activity on satellite images yet. We are not sure if these two projects involve seasonal storage reservoirs or just raise the level of the Xekong river within its historic banks behind the dams. Also not sure if the powerhouses and the dam structures are to be at the same location.

Unconfirmed site location coordinates for Xekong 3A powerhouse are - 15°23'04.2"N 106°46'44.0"E (15.384500, 106.778889) as shown on satellite image below just above Sekong town and not very far downstream from Xekong 4A proposed powerhouse location.

Xekong 3A powerhouse is also about 20 km downriver from the Xekong 4A hydropower project as in image below:

Xekong 3B is another in the cascade of planned dams on the Xekong river with its powerhouse located 35-40 km downstream of Xekong 3A near the village of Nonghin. Unconfirmed site location coordinates for Xekong 3B powerhouse are - 15°07'11.5"N 106°49'23.8"E (15.119861, 106.823278) as shown on satellite image below south of Sekong town.

The power output is expected to be transmitted, exported and sold to Electricity of Vietnam (EVN).

The developers entered into a Project Development Agreement with the Lao government on 30 May 2018.

Xekong 3A is designed for 140 MW electrical output capacity while Xekong 3B is to be 146.7 MW capacity.
